BIODIVERSITY: High in the EU Commission agenda

As part of the plan for a 'European Green Deal', the political guidelines include commitments to present a biodiversity strategy for 2030. In this framework, two event have been already announced by the EU Commission:

Event: International Conference Forests for Biodiversity and Climate Change (Brussels, 4 & 5 February 2020) – Source: European Commission

The world’s forests are in serious danger from deforestation and forest degradation, with a forest area of 1.3 million square kilometres lost between 1990 and 2016. Pressures on EU forest ecosystems due to climate change and unsustainable forest management are a reason for concern and are expected to increase in the future.

In this context, DG Environment organises an international Conference on Forest for Biodiversity and Climate Change on 4th and 5th February 2020 in Brussels  (Charlemagne building, European Commission).

Event: EU Green Week 2020 (Brussels, 1-5 June 2020) – Source: European Commission

Attracting attention around the globe, EU Green Week is the biggest annual event on the European environment policy calendar. EU Green Week 2020 will focus on nature and biodiversity. With a growing number of reports placing the global ecological crisis on the same level as climate change, the world needs a new deal for nature. That deal should be delivered at the COP15 to be held in China in October 2020, and EU Green Week should mark a milestone on the way. Gathering stakeholders from all around Europe, EU Green Week 2020 will debate the successes and gaps in EU biodiversity policy, and demonstrate the importance of biodiversity for other policy areas. It will discuss the future of EU biodiversity policy and the shape of Europe’s input to the global deal, while reaching out to citizens to build support for strong political action at the highest level.
