Briefing: The EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy

Following the presentation of the Communication on the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 – Bringing nature back into our lives (COM (2020) 380 of 20 May 2020), this briefing note provides background elements on the EU Biodiversity policy, presents the key features of its new strategy and analyses its potential effects on the CAP and the upcoming national strategic plans.

On occasion of the EP ENVI Committee  exchange of views with Commissioner Sinkevi?ius (5 June 2020), the Commissioner announced that the Commission will launch an impact assessment with a view to presenting a proposal for legally binding restoration targets in 2021 to restore ecosystems, including the most carbon-rich ones such as seagrass meadows, wetlands, peatlands, bogs, marshes as well as semi-natural grassland, old-growth and primary forests. This will aim at establishing an EU-wide methodology to map, assess and achieve good conditions for ecosystems and safeguarding capacities to deliver services such as climate and water regulation, soil health and pollination.
