Belgium at a glance: six months of presidency
30 June marks the official end of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU. With summer upon us, we can look back on a successful semester with significant results and connecting events.
On 1 July, Hungary will take over the presidency torch for the second half of 2024. After Spain and Belgium, Hungary will also be the final participant in the presidency trio programme involving the three countries.
Over the past six months, the Belgian presidency propelled the work in Council forward, responding to various crises and preparing the EU for the future. In doing so, it focussed on six priorities under the slogan ‘protect, strengthen and prepare’. The programmes of the presidency and the trio provided important guidance in this regard.
