US Tariffs on European lumber

As a result of President Trump’s Proclamation which imposes tariffs on various wood products from across the world (ADJUSTING IMPORTS OF TIMBER, LUMBER, AND THEIR DERIVATIVE PRODUCTS INTO THE UNITED STATES), tariffs on imports of sawn softwood (and softwood logs) from the EU (and some other countries) will be set at 10%.

The additional duties are effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on October 14, 2025.

As far as sawn hardwood is concerned, in the original proclamation of the US President it is stated that: by October 1, 2026, the Secretary shall provide the President with an update on imports of hardwood timber and lumber, their markets, and the domestic industry, so that the President may determine whether imposing an additional duty on imports of hardwood timber or lumber. Hence , it looks like that at the moment there will not be tariffs on sawn hardwood.

The Proclamation also stated that:

  • a 25% global tariff on certain upholstered furniture will be imposed (for the EU the tariff rate will be capped at 15%). Please note that the tariff will increase to 30% on January 1, 2026
  • a 25% global tariff on complete kitchen cabinets and vanities will be imposed (for the EU the tariff rate will be capped at 15%). Please note that the tariff will increase to 50% on January 1, 2026.
